Matthew Poitras, the 19 year old rookie, made the Boston Bruins out of training camp. The accomplishment is astounding since nobody anticipated that a year after being selected in the second round of the 2022 draft, he would accomplish the that.

Although Poitras has a solid 13 points in 27 games this season, he appears to be reacting a little more slowly on the ice than he did at the beginning of the season due to the stronger opposition and the general grind of the NHL schedule, .

Two days after the final game the Bruins played, where Poitras had an assist, was plus one, and played 14:44 of action, he was sent to the World Junior Championship. Given that there didn't seem to be any clear signs that he was being sent down, it was a somewhat unexpected decision.

Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney discussed the top rookies experience in the NHL so far:

"The league gets tougher, and he's navigating that in the first six months. You can talk to a player about it, but they need to live it—going on the road, facing new match ups, realizing the teams are solid and closing you off."

Sweeney noted his thoughts on Poitras' performance this season too:

"It's a steep learning curve, and he's handling it well. Even after a few mistakes, he maintains confidence, learns from experiences, and applies those lessons."

Don Sweeney did express his admiration for Poitras this season. Sweeney is aware that Head Coach Jim Montgomery has taught the rookie how to be a professional and has had a beneficial influence on him. Speaking of the on-ice coaching, he stated:

"Players go through ice time adjustments; it's part of the journey. It's a learning opportunity, rebounding the next night, ensuring positive communication and preserving confidence."

Poitras should play a major role in helping Team Canada place in the top six now that he's competing in the World Junior Championships. This has been a fantastic season for the rookie, albeit it is unclear if he will rejoin the Bruins following the World Juniors.
