Another wave of criticism for NHL officials, this time involving a goal for the Tampa Bay Lightning against the Winnipeg Jets that looks to have been botched
There was always hope that the 2024-25 NHL regular season would be different when it comes to controversial, and blatantly wrong calls from officials. So far, it seems not much has changed, with one of the latest issues involving a goal for the Tampa Bay Lightning against the Winnipeg Jets.
In the first period of the game taking place today, the Tampa Bay Lightning scored what was ruled a good goal with a number of players in the crease of Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck. It sure looks like Conor Geekie of the Bolts shoved on Hellebuyck's pad hare enough with his stick to push him into the net.
Winnipeg Jets coach Scott Arniel called for a coach's challenge for goaltender interference, but the officials decided there was none. There were enough complaints that the NHL decided to issue a statement explaining the decision.
"Explanation: Video review determined that no goaltender interference infractions occurred as Conor Geekie made a play on a loose puck in the crease prior to Brandon Hagel's goal. The decision was made in accordance with Rule 69.7 which states, in part, that "in a rebound situation, or where a goalkeeper and attacking player(s) are simultaneously attempting to play a loose puck, whether inside or outside the crease, incidental contact will be permitted, and any goal that is scored as a result thereof will be allowed." It hasn't even been 24 hours since the last controversial call in the NHL as two former NHLers called out officials last night over a hit in the Pittsburgh Penguins-Montreal Canadiens game.
