Dylan Larkin is still the story, and Todd McLellan now heads into an offseason that looks a lot messier in Detroit.
The Red Wings captain's trade request already shook the market.
Now the list of possible landing spots is growing, and that changes the pressure on Steve Yzerman right away.
At first, the belief was simple. Larkin, who holds a full no-trade clause, would only approve a move to the Minnesota Wild, Florida Panthers, or Vegas Golden Knights.
That's no longer where this sits.
Pierre LeBrun reported that Larkin has expanded that list, which opens the door to more calls, more leverage, and a much wider market.
That matters because Detroit was never dealing from a place of strength with only three real dance partners.
A bigger list gives the front office more ways to work this thing.
It also changes the tone around the entire file. This is no longer just about whether a contender wants Larkin.
It's about which contenders can build a package Detroit will actually take.
Detroit suddenly has more room to move with Dylan Larkin's trade
LeBrun laid out the shift clearly:
“Yzerman went back to Brisson and asked to expand their original list of three teams, and my sense is that Brisson was receptive to that to some degree. So I don't think we're just dealing with the Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers anymore.”
He pushed it further with this: “Secondly, regardless of being on the list or not, all kinds of teams have called to see what's what, many of them interested in getting involved. That's given Brisson and Larkin more to think about. For example, the Dallas Stars have absolutely checked in. They haven't extended restricted free agent Jason Robertson yet, although those contract discussions continue. Food for thought if an extension doesn't get done in due time.”
That Dallas angle jumps off the page.
Not because a trade is done, but because it shows this has moved past rumor and into real league-wide traffic.
LeBrun also added:
“And third, in a potential scenario that might help thread the needle, a trade could involve a third team in a transaction to make the assets work for Detroit. That would especially apply to a team like the Wild, who, straight up, I don't think have the parts to appease Detroit in a Larkin trade - or at least the parts that the Red Wings would want. Finding a way to get assets from a third team might be a viable scenario.”
That may be the biggest takeaway. A third team can turn a hard match into a real one, especially for clubs that need help making the assets line up.
Detroit still doesn't have an easy decision here. But the minute Larkin widened the board, Yzerman gained options, contenders gained hope, and this trade story got even bigger.
