An airplane tragically was struck by a U.S. military helicopter in Washington, DC, last night, and some of the victims were Olympic figure skating champions.

Two teenage figure skaters, their parents, and two top Russian skating coaches died in a tragic mid-air collision near Washington, D.C.

An American Airlines flight collided with an Army helicopter Wednesday night, sending the plane into the icy waters of the Potomac River.

Two World Champion skaters have sadly passed away

The Skating Club of Boston posted on Facebook that their CEO, Doug Zeghibe, has confirmed that Jinna Han, Spencer Lane, Evgenia Shishkova, and Vadim Naumov are deceased.

"This will have long reaching impacts for our community," he said during a news conference where he was visibly emotional.

U.S. Figure Skating said earlier that several athletes, coaches, and family members from the group had been headed together from a development camp following last week's national championships in Wichita, Kansas.

"We are heartbroken to learn that figure skaters, along with their families, friends and coaches, are understood to be among those on board," U.S. Figure Skating said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy.

"Figure skating is more than a sport - it's a close-knit family - and we stand together."

The former world champion pair skaters of Russia, Shishkova and Naumov, struck gold in 1994 and then emigrated to the U.S. to coach.

Since 2017, they had been at the Skating Club of Boston mentoring athletes including their son Maxim, a former junior champion who just days earlier came in fourth at nationals.

The flight was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members aboard, while the Blackhawk helicopter had three soldiers on a training mission.

Authorities have not identified the cause of the crash yet but said conditions were clear when the two aircraft crossed paths during the plane's routine landing.
