How are fans of the Dallas Mavericks handling their superstar guard's shocking trade? Let's just say that some of these people are heartbroken to the next level.
A small group of heartbroken fans were outside the American Airlines Center holding what appeared to be a full-blown funeral for their beloved franchise player.
Wearing black suits, they solemnly carried a blue coffin up the arena steps to lay out offerings such as Luka Doncic jerseys, shirts, and other paraphernalia in an arrangement akin to a wake.
Not every Mavericks fan is quite this dramatically despairing, but the shock and denial were very real in the aftermath of Saturday night's blockbuster trade that sent Doncic and Maxi Kleber to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a draft pick, with the Utah Jazz also part of the deal.
The NBA world was in some ways stunned, given that Doncic is a five-time All-Star and Most Valuable Player of last season's Western Conference Finals.
He was just off a league-leading season with 33.9 PPG at the tender age of 25. The man had been considered the cornerstone of the Dallas future.
Even Doncic seemed somewhat blindsided; his farewell message to the fans initially raised speculation that it was fake. Notably, he never mentioned the Mavericks organization, just the fans.
Adding insult to injury, even the Columbus Blue Jackets piled on to the hurt. Before their game against the Dallas Stars last night, the Blue Jackets roasted the Mavericks on X, poking fun at the shocking trade and the city's heartbreak.
The Stars did get the last laugh though, as they came out with a 5-3 victory. Dallas fans aren't just in mourning, they're the punchline of the sports world right now.
