Winnipeg Jets Goalie Calls Out One of the Biggest Problems in Hockey
Winnipeg Jets goaltender Eric Comrie recently turned NHL fans after calling out one of the biggest problems in hockey.
Eric Comrie has been a backup NHL goaltender for nine years now, playing 29 games with four different teams: the Winnipeg Jets, Detroit Red Wings, New Jersey Devils, and Buffalo Sabres.
Though he has not garnered much recent attention for his playing, he has turned some heads for his recent comments on one of the biggest problems currently plaguing the hockey world.
In a statement about the growth of the community, Comrie criticized the high-cost barriers to enter the rink, declaring his contempt for what equipment companies are taking away from kids hoping to get into the sport.
While most expenses have steadily been on the rise, the increasing costs of hockey equipment has been a particularly sore subject in the last year.
The most popular equipment brand is Montreal-based CCM, founded in 1899 and used by some of the biggest names in the league.
This company hit the news stream last August, after it was shared that ownership would be transferred again for the first time in seven years.
The former Reebok affiliate was bought by Adidas in 2006, who sold it in 2017 to Birch Hill Equity Partners for $110 million.
After seeing a major boost in revenue, the equity was set to sell the company for more than five-times what they paid for it.
In October of 2024, Stockholm-based investment firm the Altor Fund VI signed an agreement to take a majority stake.
With CCM ownership remaining in new hands, the price of equipment has done anything but go down, and Comrie's comments on the barriers to entry have yet to become a relic of the past.
