Connor Bedard's next contract just became the biggest storyline of the Chicago Blackhawks' offseason.

Agent Allan Walsh dropped a pointed message on social media this holiday weekend, tied directly to a Fourth Period report pegging Bedard's asking price at close to $17 million a season.

Walsh didn't name Bedard outright. But the post sat right under a Fourth Period item about Bedard's number, and that timing wasn't an accident.

Bedard was still playing on his entry-level deal, a cap hit of $950,000 that looks almost comical next to that projected figure.

He just wrapped a 75-point season, 30 goals and 45 assists across 69 games, at age 20.

Bedard added seven power play goals and five game-winning goals for a Blackhawks club that finished 31st overall in the league.

Walsh's shot landed wider than Bedard, too. He was calling out every player who signed a bridge deal or extension last year, then watched the cap ceiling jump right past them months later.

Agent Allan Walsh's warning points straight at Bedard's next deal

That number should worry Chicago more than it excites Bedard's camp. Kyle Davidson has run the front office since 2021, and he's about to negotiate the richest second contract in franchise history.

Locking in a franchise center on a cheap bridge deal right now is a bit like buying a house the week before the market resets. Wait a year, and the price only climbs.

Jeff Blashill took over as head coach in May 2025, and Bedard's production became one of the only steady pieces in a season that produced 213 goals for against 275 against.

Chicago finished the year 29-39-14, a minus-62 goal differential that puts a real spotlight on exactly what Bedard's next paycheck will need to justify.

Is $17 million a year defensible for a player still finding his defensive game? That's the argument Chicago's front office is about to have internally.

Whether the Blackhawks meet Bedard's number or bet on term instead, this negotiation will shape the franchise for the next decade. Walsh's post was just the first shot across the bow.
