Darnell Nurse's exit is the center of a real split in how Edmonton's offseason is being judged.
Analytics writer Dom Luszczyszyn ranked Edmonton's offseason 25th out of 32 teams, tagging the roster changes with a net rating of minus-8.
That reading clashes hard with how fans see it. A Cult of Hockey poll had 55 percent of respondents giving GM Stan Bowman an A, with another 33 percent handing out a B.
The Nurse trade sits at the center of that gap. Edmonton moved him without retaining any salary, something fans widely viewed as a clean win.
Edmonton Journal's David Staples summed up the fan mood directly.
"Oilers fans were almost unanimous in wanting Nurse moved and applauded how Bowman executed the deal."
Ryan Shea is expected to help fill those minutes, though Luszczyszyn's model treats the swap as a step back on the blue line.
Shea posted 6 goals and 29 assists for 35 points over 80 games, with a plus-30 rating that fans point to as real value at a $900,000 cap hit.
The real fight is over how to value Darnell Nurse
Staples pushed back on the pure numbers argument too, noting Nurse's own game had fallen apart in five straight playoff runs, regular-season stats aside.
Edmonton also swapped goaltenders, adding Frederik Andersen and losing Connor Ingram, a move Luszczyszyn liked if Andersen can just stay healthy.
Up front, Jack Roslovic departed after an inconsistent season, leaving Edmonton to lean on internal options unless another middle-six winger gets added.
Connor Murphy and Jason Dickinson were left out of the offseason grade entirely since both were already on the roster last season, a distinction that matters more locally than in a national ranking.
The biggest swing factor sits behind the bench. Luszczyszyn believes new head coach Mike Babcock could meaningfully lift this group based on what his last team showed in his first season there.
Edmonton is not building on a five-year plan either. The expectation is another deep playoff run right away.
Bowman's actual grade will not get decided in July. It gets decided whenever Edmonton's games start mattering again next spring.
