Zach Whitecloud could give Jim Hiller another dependable right-shot option on the Toronto Maple Leafs blue line.
A proposed trade sends Whitecloud from Calgary to Toronto for Philippe Myers, a 2027 second-round pick and Pittsburgh's 2028 fourth-round selection.

This is an editorial proposal, not a reported negotiation. Still, the fit addresses one of Toronto's remaining roster questions after a major summer overhaul.
John Chayka added Sergei Bobrovsky, Darren Raddysh, Nick Paul, Jack Roslovic, Colton Sissons and Teddy Blueger following a disappointing 2025-26 season.
Toronto improved its depth, but another right-shot defenseman would protect the lineup if Chris Tanev runs into further injury trouble.
Whitecloud could begin beside Oliver Ekman-Larsson on the third pairing. His defensive work could also push him into second-pair minutes when matchups or injuries demand it.

The contract makes the idea more attractive. Whitecloud carries a $2,750,000 cap hit through 2027-28, giving Toronto more than a short-term rental.
He played 78 games between Vegas and Calgary last season, recording 2 goals, 15 assists and 17 points.
Whitecloud also produced 124 blocked shots and 140 hits, bringing the direct, hard-nosed element Toronto could use around its crease.
For Calgary, the proposed return would add 2 draft picks and Myers, an NHL depth defenseman who could fill minutes while the organization continues reshaping its roster.

The price is the main question for Chayka. A second-round selection is meaningful, especially for a team still balancing immediate improvement with a broader retool.
Toronto would need to believe Whitecloud offers more than insurance. He must become a regular, support the defensive structure and take pressure away from Tanev and Raddysh.

Calgary also has no reason to move him cheaply. His manageable contract and right-shot profile should attract calls from several clubs seeking affordable blue-line help.
The proposal makes hockey sense for both sides, but Toronto should only pay that package if Hiller sees Whitecloud as a clear lineup upgrade rather than another depth option.
