Gabe Perreault and Mike Sullivan now face a contract cloud after the Rangers let a major extension window close.
The September 15 deadline for players to sign eight-year extensions before the new CBA rules arrived passed without Perreault securing a long-term deal with New York.
More concerning for Rangers fans, there apparently wasn't even meaningful movement toward an agreement before that window disappeared.
Peter Baugh put the situation plainly: “There haven't been any extension negotiations up to this point, I've been told.”
That leaves Chris Drury holding off on a major commitment while Perreault enters a season that could dramatically change his negotiating position.
The timing stands out because several young NHL players secured lengthy contracts before the deadline, while one of New York's most important young forwards remained unsigned beyond his current deal.

Perreault already recorded 27 points across 49 NHL games, production that gave the Rangers a clear glimpse of what his skill can bring to their top six.
His role could become even more important under Sullivan, especially if the Rangers give him consistent minutes alongside their most dangerous offensive players.
That creates risk for New York. A breakout season would strengthen Perreault's position and could make the eventual cost of retaining him considerably higher.
For Perreault, waiting also makes sense. Rather than locking into a long contract before establishing his full NHL value, he can let his play dictate the next negotiation.
The Rangers aren't losing Perreault today, and the absence of an early extension doesn't mean his departure is coming. But certainty has been replaced by another contract storyline.
New York has spent years searching for young, high-end forwards who can become long-term pieces. Perreault has the pedigree and early production to fit that description.
Now Rangers fans will watch two things at once: whether Perreault takes another major step, and whether Drury eventually finds a price that keeps him in New York.
