Young First Round Pick Has Contract Terminated: Future in Jeopardy
What once seemed like such a bright future for Ducks' first-round pick Brayden Tracey is now clouded, as his contract overseas has just been terminated.
In 2019, the Anaheim Ducks drafted Moose Jaw Warriors forward Brayden Tracey in the 29th overall position, envisioning him as a cornerstone of their future.
That dream never materialized, though. Tracey appeared in just one NHL game and was never able to translate his junior success to AHL or even NHL levels.
His most recent two AHL seasons suiting up for the San Diego Gulls saw him post 28 and 25 points, respectively, which are solid statistics yet not enough to earn a spot in the NHL.
Tracey is still only 23 years old
Today, at age 23, he has continued his career on overseas soil, suiting up for Jukurit Mikkeli in Finland's SM-Liiga in a new quest for a new beginning. In his initial 13 games, he found the scorebook once for a goal and six points.
Unfortunately, his stint there has been brought to a sudden conclusion, with his team announcing in a social media release that his contract has been terminated, with his hockey career now in question.
At 6-foot-0, and 185 pounds, Tracey has the size and skill to be a pro, however, he has yet to put it all together.
With his contract in Finland brought to a close, Tracey is faced with the key question of what is next in his career. The clock is still in his favor at age 23, yet the path ahead is far from a given.
