One of the largest questions hanging over the Edmonton Oilers this season is Evander Kane's status. Will he ever don Oilers equipment in 2024-25?
Most have speculated that he won't, and the Oilers would then be able to utilize Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR) relief.
If Kane misses the entire regular season, Edmonton would then be able to utilize his $5.125 million cap hit to improve the roster while still being able to activate him come playoff time, when the salary cap does not apply.
This has been a strategy used previously by teams working through injured stars. But that scenario isn't predestined.
The Oilers have no idea yet if Kane will be healthy enough to return before the season's end, so it's difficult to make any LTIR-based trade deadline plan definite.
Frank Seravalli appeared on 'Daily Faceoff Live' and stated Edmonton is hoping to get some clarity on the Kane situation by March 1, in order for them to shift gears in the days leading up to the trade deadline.
Another surprise? Elliotte Friedman told us that on February 28, Kane's contract converts from a flat-out No-Move Clause to a 16-team approved trade list.
That can give the prospect of potential trade negotiations if the Oilers would want to consider getting rid of him.
Kane scored 24 goals and 44 points in 77 games during last season while battling injuries. He also contributed four goals and eight points in 20 playoff games but missed the final five games of the Stanley Cup Final due to injury.
