Alexander Zharovsky has hit an early setback, and Montreal Canadiens head coach Martin St-Louis now has another prospect situation worth watching.
Zharovsky has been moved to the fourth line by Salavat Yulaev in the KHL, a surprising development before the season has even settled into rhythm.
For Montreal, the concern isn't about one lineup card. It's about what a reduced role could mean for one of the organization's most interesting young offensive prospects.
The Canadiens selected Zharovsky 34th overall in the 2025 NHL Draft after seeing the skill and offensive upside that made him such an intriguing second-round target.
He followed that by producing 42 points in 59 KHL games last season, strong output for a young winger playing against experienced professional competition.

His playoff production cooled considerably. Zharovsky recorded 2 points across 10 postseason games, giving him another area to attack entering the new season.
The bigger issue now is opportunity. Fourth-line deployment can reduce offensive-zone touches, puck possession time and access to skilled linemates.

That becomes even more important if the move also takes Zharovsky away from quality power-play minutes. Those situations can be valuable for a developing offensive player who needs touches with the puck.
There are already obvious comparisons to Ivan Demidov's final KHL season, when Canadiens fans closely tracked his deployment before his eventual move to Montreal.
The situations aren't identical, and one fourth-line assignment doesn't establish a season-long pattern. Still, Zharovsky's role will draw attention if the reduced usage continues.
A move to the VHL could become another possibility if Salavat Yulaev can't provide him with enough meaningful minutes. Regular top-line deployment there could offer a different development path.
For now, there is no indication that the change reflects a dispute between Zharovsky and his club. It could simply be an early coaching decision that changes quickly.
But Montreal will want to see him playing in situations that challenge his offensive instincts rather than spending extended stretches buried in the lineup.
After a 42-point KHL season, Zharovsky entered the year with momentum. His next assignment will show whether this fourth-line turn is temporary or the start of a tougher development season.
