Senators GM Steve Staios said publicly Sunday that he does not factor nationality into his player evaluations for Ottawa.

The quote landed on X on June 22:

"I don't look at the passport, I look at what they can offer the Ottawa Senators."

It was a direct response to whether his approach this offseason would lean toward American-born players.

Short answer: Brady Tkachuk's trade doesn't change his mind.

But here is the thing. You could make a reasonable case that the current roster already leans international by accident. Six Americans are on the books right now, including Jake Sanderson at $8.05 million and Drake Batherson at just under $5 million.

The top earner is Tim Stützle, a German. The team also carries Artem Zub from Russia, two Finns, two Swedes, and an Australian in Jordan Spence.

Staios built a diverse room, and he is not apologizing for it

Ottawa finished the regular season 44-27-11 with 99 points, good for ninth overall in the league. That kind of standing does not happen by accident, and it was not built by checking passports.

Staios took over as GM in November 2023 and has assembled a core that spans multiple countries and one that finished the year averaging 3.4 goals per game.

The Senators then ran into Carolina in the first round of the playoffs and got swept in four games. That result stings more than any roster construction debate.

What Staios said was also worth noting for what it signals heading into free agency and the draft. He is not going to artificially narrow the talent pool for any reason.

That is either refreshing or obvious, depending on who you ask.

A GM filtering by passport would be like a chef refusing to use imported ingredients. The dish suffers. The roster suffers.

The real question is not where the next Senator was born. It is whether Staios can finally bring in the pieces that hold up against elite competition, because a 99-point season swept in round one is not the destination.

That conversation is just getting started.
