Matthew Beniers and Lane Lambert are suddenly tied to Montreal chatter after one airport sighting lit up the offseason.

A photo of the Seattle Kraken center at Trudeau airport sent the rumour mill flying and gave Canadiens fans a fresh name to chase.

The image was first shared by Maxime Truman, and that was enough to turn a random stop into a full-blown trade conversation.

It's easy to see why the noise picked up so fast. Beniers is 23, plays down the middle, shoots left, and fits the kind of profile Montreal has been linked to for months.

His deal only adds fuel. Beniers carries a $7.14 million cap hit for five more seasons, and there is no trade protection in place until 2030.

That kind of contract gives a front office room to think big, especially when the player is still young enough to anchor a top six for a long stretch.

Why this rumour took off so fast with Matty Beniers

The pushback came just as quickly. Marco D'Amico poured cold water on the idea and pointed to the biggest flaw in the whole theory.

A player without trade protection usually is not flying in to scope out a city before a move gets done. That's not how these deals usually unfold.

D'Amico also said Seattle's price point is sky high, adding that Beniers is not available unless the return is “absolutely bonkers.”

That line matters because it changes the tone.

This is not a player the Kraken are shopping at a discount to fix a summer problem.

There's also the most obvious explanation of all.

Beniers may simply have been passing through Montreal on a layover or there for reasons that have nothing to do with hockey.

Still, the timing keeps this alive.

Beniers has popped up in trade chatter before, and when a young center with name value shows up in a market like Montreal, fans connect dots fast.

For now, that's all this is: smoke, noise, and a photo. But in late June, that's more than enough to own the hockey conversation for a day.
