Connor Hellebuyck is on Rod Brind'Amour's radar after Carolina reportedly put Alexander Nikishin and a first-round pick on the table.
That's the kind of swing that gets the league's attention fast, especially when the target is a 3-time Vezina Trophy winner and still one of the NHL's elite difference-makers in net.
According to Frank Seravalli, the Hurricanes “made a pitch this week” for Hellebuyck, and the framework was anything but small. Carolina reportedly offered Nikishin plus a 1st-round pick.
On paper, that's a serious package. Nikishin is 24, and the young blue liner scored 11 goals in his freshman season while landing on the All-Rookie team.
That gives Carolina a real trade chip. It also shows Brind'Amour's club isn't looking for a depth fix or a small roster tweak. This is a run at a franchise goalie.
And that's where the pressure shifts to Winnipeg. If the Jets are even willing to listen, the ask is going to start high and probably climb from there.
Carolina's offer feels strong, but maybe not enough for Hellebuyck
Nikishin has value, and a 1st-round pick always matters. But Hellebuyck is not a middle-tier starter coming off a shaky year. He's the kind of goalie who changes a team's ceiling the second he arrives.
That's why this reported offer feels more like an opening push than a finish line. A goalie of Hellebuyck's caliber usually demands more than 2 premium pieces.
Seravalli's report also described Nikishin as a player “swirling in trade winds this week,” which adds another layer here. Carolina may be trying to cash in a strong asset while chasing a bigger prize.
From Winnipeg's side, there's no reason to rush if this is the market. A 1st-round pick helps, and Nikishin brings upside on the blue line, but the Jets can still push for more futures or another NHL-ready piece.
That's the real story in this one. Carolina has shown its hand, and it's an aggressive hand. The Hurricanes are clearly hunting for a major crease upgrade, not patchwork depth.
Now the question is whether this was the bold move that starts the conversation or the offer that gets laughed back across the table. For a goalie like Hellebuyck, that line is thin.
Should the Winnipeg Jets accept Carolina's offer for Connor Hellebuyck?
