Dylan Larkin and Todd McLellan now sit at the center of Detroit's biggest offseason storm after Steve Yzerman finally addressed the trade request.

The Red Wings captain remains on the roster, but the tone changed fast once Yzerman spoke after the draft. This is no longer quiet background noise around Detroit.

Yzerman made it clear he is not working from Dylan Larkin's timeline. He is working from the club's side of the table, and that leaves the captain in a tough spot.

That matters because Larkin is not some fringe piece on the trade block. He is the face of the room, the team captain, and a player tied directly to where this roster goes next.

The bigger issue is not just the request itself. It is the fact this has been moving for weeks, which tells you the split is deeper than one bad stretch or one rough conversation.

Pat Brisson's response did not pour gas on it, but it did confirm this is not a brand-new fight. The process is already well underway.

The trade request is now fully out in the open from Dylan Larkin

“Shortly after the season, I received a phone call from Dylan Larkin's agent, informing me that Dylan would like to be traded,” Yzerman said. “A week or so after that, Dylan's agent followed up with a short list of teams that Dylan would consider waiving his no-trade (clause) to go to.” “My job as the manager of the Detroit Red Wings is always to do what is in the best interest of the Detroit Red Wings, and I will act accordingly to that,” Yzerman said. “I cannot make any guarantees, or did not make any guarantees, that that request could or would be met.”

Larkin's agent said otherwise though.

“The process is that we've had discussions for the last month or so,” said Brisson. “And we've agreed that we'll be working together on this. I do understand that Steve and the organization have to do what's best for the Red Wings. We're trying to work as a ‘team' together on this to reach each of our goals so to speak.”

That last part is the key. Brisson called it teamwork, but Yzerman's message was colder and much firmer.

Detroit now heads toward free agency with uncertainty around its top center and captain.

That is a brutal place for a team still trying to climb back into the playoff picture.

This story is no longer about rumors. It is about leverage, timing, and whether the Red Wings can move their most important forward without making the roster worse.
