John Davidson is heading to Buffalo, where Lindy Ruff now gets another veteran voice around a Sabres team that just ended its long playoff drought.

The Sabres hired Davidson as a senior advisor, adding one more experienced executive to a hockey department already led by general manager Jarmo Kekäläinen.

It's not a random fit. Davidson and Kekäläinen go way back, and Buffalo is clearly leaning into that shared history as it tries to stay on track.

Davidson, 73, brings 20 years of NHL front-office work. That kind of résumé matters for a team trying to move from feel-good story to steady contender.

He spent 18 seasons as president of hockey operations with the St. Louis Blues, Columbus Blue Jackets, and New York Rangers.

He also worked as a senior advisor in Columbus in 2024-25 and stepped in as interim general manager during the 2023-24 season.

Buffalo adds another old hand

This move says plenty about where the Sabres see themselves right now. They're not building from scratch anymore. They're trying to protect momentum.

Buffalo went 50-23-9 last season, won the Atlantic Division, and reached the second round before losing Game 7 to the Montreal Canadiens.

That kind of season changes the pressure inside a front office. The questions are no longer about promise. They're about staying power.

Davidson has lived in that space before. In St. Louis, he helped oversee a jump from 57 points to 108 points over a six-year run.

He was part of a similar climb in Columbus, where the Blue Jackets moved from 65 points to four straight playoff appearances under his watch.

Buffalo also now has three front-office voices with GM experience: Kekäläinen, Marc Bergevin, and Davidson. That's a lot of bench strength behind the scenes.

For the Sabres, this isn't just another executive hire. It's a sign they believe last season opened a real window, and they're staffing up to keep it open.
