Jack Campbell is walking away from hockey, closing his final NHL chapter after a Detroit stint under head coach Todd McLellan.
The 34-year-old goaltender announced his decision Sunday, ending a career that took him through Dallas, Los Angeles, Toronto, Edmonton and Detroit.
“I grew up my entire life chasing one dream, and that was to play in the NHL,” Campbell said in a video posted to Instagram.
“I was fortunate enough to accomplish that goal, playing eight seasons in the NHL and becoming an NHL all-star. Frankly, on paper, (I was) living a pretty awesome life.”
Campbell also pulled back the curtain on the strain he carried behind the scenes, moving the announcement beyond a standard retirement message.
“Super grateful for my days of playing, but what a lot of people don't see is the personal battle I went through throughout my career.”

Campbell confirmed in his caption that he was “walking away” from the sport after not playing during the 2025-26 season.
“Walking away from hockey wasn't easy. It gave me more than I could have ever imagined. But over the last few years, I realized the work that brought me the most fulfillment wasn't stopping pucks - it was helping people become who they're capable of becoming.”
Campbell plans to pursue work as a life coach, turning his attention toward helping others after years spent battling for stability inside the crease.
His last NHL appearance came during the 2023-24 season with Edmonton. He entered the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program in October 2024.
Campbell later appeared in 14 AHL games for the Grand Rapids Griffins, but never returned to Detroit's NHL roster.
The former first-round pick finishes with a .909 save percentage and a 2.76 goals-against average across 176 NHL games.
His strongest memories may come from Toronto, where his personality and emotional connection with the locker room made him a fan favourite.
But Campbell's final message wasn't about statistics. It was about choosing fulfillment away from the pressure that followed him throughout his career.
