Daren Millard asked whether the league's choice had effectively narrowed to Austin or Houston during a recent 100% Hockey discussion.
John Shannon answered that Houston currently holds the edge. Doug MacLean was even more direct, naming Houston as the likely destination.
Their comments don't amount to an official announcement. The NHL has not confirmed Houston as an expansion market or revealed a completed process.
Still, this wasn't vague speculation about a long list of possible cities. Two experienced hockey voices pointed toward the same market without hesitation.
That gives Houston real momentum in a debate that could reshape the league's map and create another major southern hockey market.

Austin has grown quickly and carries its own appeal, but Houston may present the cleaner business case if the league wants the largest available Texas market.
The state already has the Dallas Stars, so another Texas franchise would create an immediate regional connection and a natural in-state rivalry.
That rivalry could become one of the expansion pitch's strongest elements. Travel would be manageable, fan interest would have a familiar opponent, and the league could deepen its reach across Texas.
But the word “officially” still needs restraint. Shannon and MacLean expressed where they believe the race stands, not that league approval has been completed.
Expansion requires ownership, arena planning, financial commitments and support from the NHL's existing clubs. Any one of those pieces can change the timeline.
The current message is still difficult to ignore: Houston appears to have moved ahead of Austin in the eyes of connected hockey observers.
Until the NHL speaks, Houston remains the leading possibility rather than a confirmed franchise. But this expansion race suddenly looks far less open than it did before.
