Alexis Lafreniere enters a defining season as Mike Sullivan searches for more offense from the New York Rangers.

Elliotte Friedman called Lafreniere one of the league's most interesting situations to watch when the season begins.

His framing was blunt: the Rangers can either trade their problem or solve it. That puts Lafreniere's future directly beside his performance.

Friedman also left room for a reset, describing a possible new lease on life. Sullivan now has the chance to test whether a different role can unlock more from the winger.

The pressure goes beyond Lafreniere. Vincent Mercogliano reports that the Rangers are actively seeking more firepower and remain open to adding either a center or a winger.

That search creates immediate competition. Any forward brought in by Chris Drury could take offensive-zone starts, power-play touches or top-six minutes away from Lafreniere.

" Vincent Mercogliano: The Rangers recognize that they still need firepower up front and are actively seeking it. They're open to both centers and wingers - The Athletic (7/21) "

Several teams could emerge as potential suitors for Alexis Lafreniere if the Rangers decide to explore a trade.

The New Jersey Devils, Philadelphia Flyers, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks could all make sense as possible destinations.

Each club could offer Lafreniere a fresh opportunity, a larger offensive role and more top-six minutes.

For now, these teams remain logical possibilities rather than confirmed trade partners.

Alexis Lafreniere's Rangers future just became far more uncertain after Friedman's warning

The Rangers don't need to move Lafreniere simply because the conversation has grown louder. But they do need a clear plan for him once training camp opens.

A fresh role under Sullivan could mean steadier linemates, more offensive deployment and a longer runway through difficult stretches. Another uneven assignment would only deepen the uncertainty.

The trade route carries its own risk. Moving Lafreniere before resolving his fit could mean selling at a reduced value while another club gives him the opportunity New York never fully established.

Drury's search for offense adds urgency because the roster still needs more scoring support up front. That need can be addressed through an addition, a Lafreniere rebound or both.

The key will be whether Sullivan treats Lafreniere as part of the solution. A reduced role would send a very different message than a real chance beside skilled forwards.

Friedman's comment captures the choice facing the Rangers. They can move the player and close the chapter, or build a role that gives him one last chance to change the story.

" Elliotte Friedman: Re Alexis Lafreniere/Rangers: I think that's gonna be an interesting one to watch as the season starts; you can either trade your problem or solve your problem...and I think there's a bit of a chance here for a new lease on life - 32 Thoughts (7/6) "

New York's next forward move may reveal the answer. If another winger arrives, Lafreniere's path tightens. If the Rangers hold, the pressure shifts back to Sullivan and the player.
