Pavel Mintyukov is staying with Joel Quenneville's Ducks, but Anaheim reportedly needed a major commitment to keep him away from Carolina.
The Ducks signed the 22-year-old defenseman to a five-year extension carrying a $7.2 million annual cap hit.
That agreement secured a major piece of Anaheim's blue line. It also ended the threat of another club forcing general manager Pat Verbeek into a difficult decision.
Elliotte Friedman reported that the Carolina Hurricanes were the team behind the offer sheet presented to Mintyukov.
The identity had remained unconfirmed while Anaheim worked to close the deal. Carolina's involvement adds weight to the pressure surrounding the negotiations.
The Hurricanes weren't simply checking on availability. Mintyukov reportedly had an offer sheet ready to be signed, leaving the Ducks with little room to hesitate.
Pat Verbeek faced pressure from two directions
Anaheim was already dealing with another aggressive push toward its young core. The Philadelphia Flyers had submitted a five-year offer sheet worth $18 million per season to restricted free agent Leo Carlsson.
That move placed the Ducks in a difficult spot. Waiting too long on Mintyukov could have created another expensive decision within days.
Verbeek responded by securing the defenseman before Carolina could pull him away. The contract keeps Mintyukov in Anaheim through an important stage of the club's attempt to move forward.
Mintyukov's development made him an obvious offer-sheet target. His five-on-five expected-goal share improved by nearly 20 percentage points during his latest season.
That progress gives Quenneville another mobile defenseman capable of moving the puck and supporting controlled entries. It also strengthens a blue line that needs stability around its younger pieces.
The extension reportedly leaves Anaheim with roughly $10 million in cap space. Cutter Gauthier and Tyson Hinds remain unsigned restricted free agents, though Gauthier isn't eligible to receive an offer sheet.
Mintyukov is secured, but the larger message remains. Rival teams saw an opening around Anaheim's young talent and pushed Verbeek into action.
Carolina's reported involvement shows how seriously other contenders viewed Mintyukov. The Ducks kept him, but they paid the price required to close the door.
