Quinn Hughes remains unsigned as John Hynes waits for Minnesota's biggest contract decision to reach the finish line.
Bill Guerin confirmed that he has stayed in contact with Hughes' camp, but offered no timetable for an extension.
“These things take time,” Guerin said, describing the negotiations as a process involving a major decision for both sides.
That answer won't end the tension around Minnesota. Hughes is under contract through 2026-27, leaving the Wild with time but no room for complacency.
Minnesota paid heavily to acquire him, sending Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren and Zeev Buium to Vancouver in the deal.
A package that large only works if Hughes becomes the permanent engine of Hynes' blue line rather than a short-term addition.

Hughes showed his value immediately with 5 goals and 53 points in 48 games last season, giving the Wild elite production from the back end.
His skating drives controlled exits, neutral-zone possession and power-play movement. Replacing that influence would be almost impossible through one trade or signing.
Reports indicated Guerin planned to meet Hughes and his representatives in Michigan, but no agreement has emerged publicly from those discussions.
There's also no indication that Hughes wants to leave. The concern comes from the delay and the size of the decision still sitting in front of Minnesota.
A rising salary cap will shape the price, while term may become the more difficult issue. Guerin needs long-term security after surrendering 3 major young assets.
Hughes may prefer flexibility, especially with Jack Hughes and Luke Hughes established in New Jersey. Any future possibility involving his brothers adds another layer to the negotiation.
The Wild also need forward help if they want to become a true Stanley Cup threat. Guerin must lock up Hughes without losing the flexibility required to strengthen the top six.
Open communication is better than silence, but Minnesota needs more than a calm public message. The deal must eventually follow.
Hughes gives the Wild a foundation capable of changing their ceiling. Until his signature arrives, every passing week will make the future feel less secure.
