Houston continues to surface as one of the NHL's most attractive potential destinations, but the bigger question is whether the league would expand or move an existing club.
That conversation has put the Winnipeg Jets, Columbus Blue Jackets and Ottawa Senators under the microscope for three very different reasons.
Columbus has struggled to build sustained momentum, and the decision to eliminate its dedicated radio broadcast created another talking point around the organization's connection with its local market.
Ottawa's situation carries more moving parts. The Senators have new ownership and a downtown arena plan that could give the franchise a much stronger long-term foundation.
Still, previous attendance concerns and arena uncertainty have kept Ottawa connected to relocation chatter, even with the organization moving toward a different future.
Winnipeg might create the strongest reaction. The Jets returned to Manitoba after the original franchise left in 1996, and their fanbase remains deeply attached to the club.
Houston creates a bigger NHL question
The concern around Winnipeg comes down to market size. It remains the NHL's smallest market, leaving far less room for a major attendance decline than clubs operating in larger cities.
None of the three organizations is officially preparing to relocate. There is no indication from the NHL, Winnipeg, Columbus or Ottawa that a move is currently being pursued.
That makes this a debate rather than a transaction. But Houston's appeal keeps the subject alive because the league eventually has to decide how another major American market could fit.
Expansion would bring a large franchise fee and increase the NHL's footprint. Relocation would open Houston without adding another team or spreading the league's talent across another roster.
For Winnipeg, Columbus and Ottawa, that distinction matters. Every attendance dip, arena development or business decision can create another round of speculation when a market like Houston is waiting.
There's no move on the table right now. But Houston has given NHL fans a clear reason to watch these three franchises more closely.
