The latest report just gave the Canucks a center option nobody expected

Aatu Raty has a real shot at locking down a permanent NHL role this season, and the door at center is about as open as it gets in Vancouver.

On paper, the depth chart down the middle reads Elias Pettersson, Marco Rossi, Filip Chytil, and Raty, four names for what really looks like three real jobs.

Raty posted 4 goals and 10 assists for 14 points in 66 games last season, a modest total but a real jump in NHL playing time compared to his earlier stints bouncing between Vancouver and the AHL's Abbotsford Canucks.

He was a second round pick by the Islanders back in 2021, taken 52nd overall, and his path to Vancouver ran through waivers and a series of two-way assignments before he finally carved out real minutes last year.

With Pettersson and Rossi presumably locked into the top two center spots, the real battle is for the 3C job, and Raty enters camp as one of the more obvious candidates to claim it.

Why Chytil could end up as a winger, not a center

He's not the only name in that mix though. Ty Mueller only appeared in 6 NHL games last season, picking up 1 point, but he's still in the conversation as a legitimate center option if he impresses in camp.

Chytil complicates things further. He's technically a center by trade, but a very real scenario has him sliding to the wing instead out of pure roster necessity, especially given how thin Vancouver's center depth actually looks beyond Pettersson and Rossi.

Chytil managed just 3 goals and 0 assists for 3 points in 12 games last season, a tiny sample that leaves real uncertainty about exactly where he fits best this year.

That leaves the door genuinely wide open. There's no obvious fourth center already entrenched in this lineup, which means real opportunity for whoever actually earns it in training camp.

For a rebuilding team like Vancouver, that kind of open competition is exactly the environment a player like Raty wants. There's no incumbent standing in his way, no long-term contract blocking a path to real NHL minutes.

If Raty wins that job outright, Vancouver's center group settles into something resembling Pettersson, Rossi, Raty, with Chytil sliding into a winger role and Mueller waiting in the wings as organizational depth.

Whether that's actually how it plays out depends entirely on what training camp reveals over the next month, but for Raty specifically, this is about as clear a path to a real NHL role as he's likely to get.
