Nicolas Aube-Kubel is reportedly nearing an NHL exit after his latest run under Minnesota Wild head coach John Hynes.
The veteran winger is closing in on a deal with Dinamo Minsk of the KHL, according to a new report, potentially ending his North American search for another NHL opportunity.
Aube-Kubel spent his most recent season inside the Wild organization, moving between Minnesota and its AHL affiliate in Iowa rather than locking down a permanent NHL lineup spot.
That deployment told part of the story. Aube-Kubel once brought enough speed, forechecking pressure and physical play to hold down a bottom-six role, but his NHL market has clearly tightened.
His next move now appears set to take him overseas. A deal with Dinamo Minsk would give Aube-Kubel a fresh opportunity after a summer in which an NHL contract failed to materialize.
The winger had also joined Winners Hockey Agency, which represents players pursuing opportunities in Europe. That move now carries more weight with his reported KHL agreement getting closer.
A Stanley Cup winner heads toward a new chapter
Aube-Kubel will always carry one memorable NHL achievement. He was part of the Colorado Avalanche group that captured the Stanley Cup in 2022 under head coach Jared Bednar.
His celebration also produced one of the more unusual Cup moments from that championship run. Aube-Kubel fell while bringing the trophy toward the team picture and accidentally dented its base.
The scene became part of that Avalanche celebration, but his career soon moved in another direction. Aube-Kubel bounced through multiple organizations while trying to maintain a regular bottom-six role.
Washington offered him another meaningful NHL stop, where his straight-line game and forechecking fit the Capitals' depth group. Minnesota became the latest organization to give him a look.
Now the KHL offers something the NHL market hasn't provided this summer: a clear path to his next contract and potentially a larger role.
For Aube-Kubel, this isn't simply another offseason signing. It's a major career shift for a Stanley Cup winner who spent years battling for lineup space across the league.
Unless another NHL opportunity changes the situation, Dinamo Minsk appears ready to become the next stop for Nicolas Aube-Kubel.
