Michael Hage won't join head coach Martin St-Louis this fall after committing to another season at Michigan.
The Canadiens prospect is returning to the Wolverines for a 3rd NCAA season, closing the door on an immediate move into the professional ranks.
That matters because Montreal had reason to wonder whether Hage could be convinced to change course after 2 strong college seasons.
Instead, the message from Michigan is firm. Hage is expected back, and the organization can now plan around another year of college hockey.
The clearest confirmation came from inside the Wolverines program: “He is going back to Michigan. I can't speak for him, but that's what he told me, and I believe him.”
That removes much of the uncertainty around his short-term path. A last-minute shift would now be a surprise rather than the expected outcome.

For Montreal, the consequence is simple: Hage won't be pushing for a roster spot at training camp, and Martin St-Louis won't have to weigh that decision yet.

The extra NCAA season also gives Hage a clear assignment. He wants to become a more complete center, not just a player who piles up points.
That means more attention to his work away from the puck, his reads through the middle and the details that decide whether a center earns trust at the NHL level.
The Canadiens can afford that patience. They don't need to rush Hage into a depth role before he is ready to handle NHL responsibilities.
Kent Hughes also keeps control of the timeline. Hage can return to Michigan, play big minutes and arrive in Montreal with another full season of high-end responsibility behind him.
If that year goes the way the Canadiens hope, the payoff could come next spring, when Hage may be better positioned to compete for a job instead of simply learning on the fly.
So the professional debut has been pushed back, but the door to Montreal is not closing. Hage's choice gives both sides more time before the real roster decision arrives.
