Connor McDavid and head coach Mike Babcock will see the Edmonton Oilers take the ice in a dramatically different look next season.

The Oilers are joining the NHL's Hometown Remix program, which will give all 32 teams a special-edition uniform during the 2026-27 season.

Edmonton's version is expected to feature black as its primary colour, a major departure from the blue, orange and white sweaters traditionally associated with the franchise.

That black base would immediately separate the new sweater from Edmonton's current collection and give the club one of its most unconventional looks.

Early details have also pointed toward design elements connected to the dark navy alternate Edmonton introduced in 2019, potentially opening the door for brighter orange accents.

The idea is for the Hometown Remix sweater to offer a sharp contrast to the cream-coloured alternate the Oilers already have in their rotation.

Oilers prepare for a fourth jersey option

Edmonton is set to carry four different sweaters during the 2026-27 campaign: its regular home and road uniforms, the cream alternate and the new Hometown Remix design.

That gives the Oilers another chance to connect their on-ice identity with Oil Country while giving fans something completely different from the club's traditional colour combinations.

The league-wide project was created with local identity in mind, with every team receiving a design intended to reflect its city, supporters and surrounding culture.

For Edmonton, going with black would be the biggest visual change. The franchise has spent decades leaning heavily on blue, orange and white, making this design stand apart immediately.

There are still details to come before the finished sweater is fully unveiled, including the final crest, striping and other Edmonton-specific touches.

The Hometown Remix program also extends beyond jerseys, with matching apparel and headwear planned as part of the collection.

For a team whose classic colours are among the NHL's most recognizable, the Oilers are taking a noticeably different direction. Whether fans embrace it could become one of Edmonton's more interesting off-ice storylines entering the new season.
