Connor McDavid to the Montreal Canadiens still sounds like fan fiction. But the chatter got louder again this week.

Stu Cowan raised the idea on the Sick Podcast, framing the Canadiens as a logical fit if Edmonton ever moves on from its captain.

Then Arpon Basu of The Athletic got the same question in his mailbag. His answer wasn't a flat denial.

"It's definitely making noise," Basu wrote. "But that's all it is. For now."

McDavid put up 138 points last season, 48 goals and 90 assists, numbers that explain why every team in the league dreams about him. There is also this:

His cap hit sits at $12,500,000, and he's a free agent after the 2027-28 season, which puts a real clock on Edmonton's next move.

Would McDavid actually want Montreal? Nobody's said that out loud yet, and that's the part nobody can answer.

Why Kent Hughes could actually make the call

Kent Hughes has the prospect capital to build an interesting package, and Montreal has room to maneuver under the cap.

The Canadiens finished 48-24-10 this season, sixth overall in the league, a real contender window under head coach Martin St-Louis.

Edmonton finished 41-30-11, 14th overall, a season that didn't match the noise that follows its captain everywhere.

Montreal split the season series with the Oilers, a 5-6 loss on the road and a 4-1 win at home.

Realistically, this trade doesn't happen unless Edmonton completely falls apart. Right now, that's not close to true.

Chasing this rumor is like chasing a loose puck along the boards. Everybody wants it, but nobody's got a real handle on it yet.

McDavid's contract clock keeps ticking toward 2028, and every rumor like this one just adds more pressure to Edmonton's summer.
