Quinn Hughes and the Minnesota Wild might be closer to a deal than the calendar suggests, according to a fresh insider report.
The Athletic's Michael Russo said on The Sheet on August 11 that Hughes may feel a real sense of obligation to Minnesota.
His theory: Hughes understands exactly what the Wild gave up to get him, and that debt is part of why people expect him to sign.
Minnesota sent Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, Liam Ohgren, and a 2026 first-round pick to Vancouver just to acquire Hughes in the first place.
That's a massive price for one player, even a generational one, and Russo's read is that Hughes feels the weight of it.
Hughes backed that up with production. He posted 76 points on 7 goals and 69 assists in 74 games, then added 15 points in 11 playoff games.
General manager Bill Guerin has already traveled to Michigan for talks, and there's still no signed extension as August winds down.

Feeling like you owe an organization is a nice storyline. It doesn't automatically produce a signature on a three-year deal worth real money.
Craig Leipold already said publicly in June that Minnesota intends to re-sign him, which lines up with Russo's read on the situation.
Hughes carries a $7,850,000 cap hit right now, and reports have pegged a new extension somewhere around $18 million annually.
Head coach John Hynes still has to build his season around a player whose long-term future keeps getting talked about instead of settled.
Is gratitude enough to close a gap that large? Usually not, but it does explain why Minnesota hasn't panicked and gone shopping for trade partners yet.
The New Jersey Devils connection hasn't disappeared either, and Russo's comments don't change that Hughes can still test free agency in July 2027.
