Matthew Mayich remains hospitalized as Arizona State head coach Greg Powers and the Sun Devils await answers after a team workout.

The Arizona State defenseman collapsed during an outdoor exercise Thursday morning and required emergency medical attention before being transported to a hospital.

The university is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the workout, adding a major layer of concern around a player preparing for his first season with the Sun Devils.

Mayich was identified as the player Tuesday. The 21-year-old Ontario native remained hospitalized as of Tuesday night, with Arizona State offering support to him, his family and teammates.

Tempe Fire Medical Rescue responded at 8:31 a.m. to a reported heat-related illness at Sun Angel Stadium. The Phoenix area was under an extreme heat warning at the time.

That timing is now part of the larger review. Arizona State has acknowledged it is examining what led to the workout and the medical emergency that followed.

Blues prospect faces uncertain road: Prayers for Matthew Mayich

Mayich isn't only an Arizona State newcomer. He was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft, giving this situation a direct NHL connection.

He transferred to Arizona State after spending the 2025-26 season at Clarkson, where he produced 15 points in 34 games from the blue line.

The Sun Devils list Mayich at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, with the defenseman wearing No. 27 heading into the new college season.

For Powers and Arizona State, hockey considerations have moved far down the list. The immediate focus is Mayich's condition and determining exactly what happened during that Thursday morning session.

Questions also remain around how the workout was organized and what safeguards were in place while players trained outdoors in Arizona summer conditions.

Arizona State is scheduled to open its season October 2 at Lindenwood, but Mayich's hockey timeline is secondary until more is known about his recovery.

The investigation now puts attention on the program well beyond the rink. A young Blues prospect remains hospitalized, and Arizona State is trying to establish how a team exercise ended with such a serious medical emergency.
