Dylan Larkin could be headed to a Canadian team on the rise, according to latest proposal

Dylan Larkin and the Detroit Red Wings are back in the trade rumor mill, and Wednesday morning it was TSN's Bryan Hayes fueling it.

Hayes brought it up on OverDrive, calling a Larkin move to the Montreal Canadiens something that "makes too much sense" given their depth up front.

His exact words:

"The idea of having Suzuki and Larkin as your one two in Montreal, with the firepower on the wing and the prospects in the system, that just makes too much sense."

Hayes has pushed this connection before. Larkin, by his own account, still hasn't "come around" to the idea himself.

On the ice, Larkin gave Detroit plenty to work with. He put up 67 points in 74 games this season.

He was rolling down the stretch too, picking up 11 points in his final 10 games.

Detroit closed the year at 41-31-10, sitting 6th in the Atlantic Division after an L3 finish.

The math behind a Suzuki-Larkin pairing gets messy

Nick Suzuki isn't cheap either. He's carrying a $7,875,000 cap hit off a 101-point season.

He kept producing into the playoffs too, picking up 16 points in 19 games.

Stack Larkin's $8,700,000 cap hit next to that, and Montreal would be paying two number-one centers at the top of the market.

It's a pricey experiment, and it doesn't scream clean roster fit either. Pairing two number-one centers is a little like signing two starting quarterbacks and hoping one plays wide receiver.

Somebody switches positions or somebody sits, and neither option is simple in a market like Montreal.

Martin St-Louis already has size and scoring at center in his current lineup.

Nothing in this story comes from inside Montreal's front office. Hayes was clear this is his own read, not a report of an actual trade being worked.

Nothing forces Detroit's hand right now, and nothing suggests Montreal has picked up the phone. But the idea keeps resurfacing, and Wednesday proved it still isn't going away.
