Ivan Demidov just got the kind of praise that actually means something for the Canadiens.
Kris Letang, a three-time Stanley Cup winner with over 1,000 career games, compared Demidov's game to Pavel Datsyuk this week.
That's not a comparison veteran defensemen throw around for fun. Letang has spent his career trying to stop players exactly like this.
He didn't stop at the comparison, either. Letang predicted Demidov could be a top-five player in the league within three years.
The condition attached was simple: stay healthy, keep developing. Nothing dramatic, just the usual asterisk on any bold prediction.
Demidov is only 20 years old, and he already has the numbers to back up the hype. 19 goals, 43 assists, 62 points in 82 games last season.
He followed that up with nine points in 19 playoff games as Montreal made a surprising run to the Eastern Conference Final.
Why an opponent's praise carries more weight than a scouting report
Letang, at 39 years old, put up 34 points of his own last season across 74 games for the Penguins, still logging real minutes on Pittsburgh's blue line.
He's played against generations of the league's best forwards. When a defenseman with that resume says a 20-year-old reminds him of a Hall of Famer, it's worth noticing.

The Datsyuk comparison isn't about hands or highlight reels. It's about unpredictability, the thing that actually makes defenders miserable on the ice.
Demidov already shows that trait, forcing defenders to guess instead of just react.
Montreal finished 48-24-10 last season, sixth overall in the league, a jump nobody outside the room fully saw coming.
Head coach Martin St-Louis now has a 20-year-old who didn't disappear once the games got heavier in the playoffs.
That matters more than the goal total. Plenty of young players score in October. Fewer produce when a series is on the line.
Is Demidov actually going to be a top-five player in three years? Nobody knows that yet, including Letang.
But when the guy trying to shut you down starts comparing you to Datsyuk, that's the kind of respect that doesn't get handed out for free.
The next step belongs to Demidov now, another season to prove Letang wasn't just being generous with a young opponent.
