Chris Kreider is staying in Montreal, and he did it by saying no to more money somewhere else.
Sportsnet's Eric Engels reported this weekend that the winger's new deal with the Canadiens is done.
According to his agent, Matt Keator, Kreider turned away richer offers to make this happen.
That detail matters. At 35, term and dollars usually win those arguments.
Kreider picked a room instead.
He's coming off a season where he gave Montreal steady secondary scoring on a club that just won 48 games.
His 2025-26 line: 75 games, 22 goals, 28 assists, 50 points, with 8 of those goals coming on the power play.

He kept producing when the games got tighter too. Seven points in 12 playoff games, on 2 goals and 5 assists.
Montreal finished the season 48-24-10, good for 106 points, sixth overall in the league and third in its own division.
For head coach Martin St-Louis, that's a proven net-front option he doesn't have to replace this summer.
GM Kent Hughes gets something out of this too. Term stability up front is not a given for every team chasing a long run.
Kreider's minus-4 rating last season is the one number that will get picked apart if his role shifts even slightly.

Turning down more money in free agency is a little like passing on a bigger house in a city you never wanted to live in. The upgrade means nothing if the fit is wrong.
Betting term on a player in his mid-thirties is usually the move that ages badly around the league. This one, given what Kreider still brings on the power play and in front of the net, reads different.
The bigger question is what his usage looks like once St-Louis sets his lines for next season. That part of the story is not settled yet, and neither is what the numbers on this deal end up being once they're made public.
