Maple Leafs legend makes bold prediction about Gavin McKenna before NHL debut

Gavin McKenna is stepping into the Maple Leafs organization carrying the full weight of a first overall pick.

Toronto took McKenna first overall at the 2026 NHL Draft, and he's walking into a market that hasn't hidden its hunger for a winner.

Wendel Clark knows exactly what that feels like. Toronto took him first overall in 1985, and he spent his first nine seasons wearing the jersey.

Clark broke down what he's seen from McKenna at the Maple Leafs' charity golf tournament at RattleSnake Point Golf Club in Milton, Ontario.

"He's such a smart player, and that's the thing that is going to work to his benefit," Clark said. "The skill set he has, he's such a smart player to adapt to situations."

Clark didn't stop there. "That's really the biggest thing, it's a matter of getting used to playing every night," he added.

McKenna won't be walking into an empty room. John Tavares and Auston Matthews were both first overall picks themselves, and Mats Sundin, now a senior executive advisor, was too.

"You're playing at the highest pace for the first time in your life and playing against men every shift," Clark said.

Junior and college hockey doesn't prepare a kid for that jump, according to Clark, since most opponents there haven't hit full man strength yet.

Can an 18 year old really be ready for that kind of workload right away? Clark thinks the support system around McKenna gives him a real shot.

It's a bit like inheriting the family restaurant during a health inspection, everyone watching how you handle the pressure before you've even plated a dish.

McKenna has already handled the media grind through two World Junior Championships, the draft, and this summer's development camp in Toronto.

"I think it's easier to start here than come here at 26 and run into all you guys for the first time every day," Clark said, referring to the media scrum McKenna now faces nightly.

Toronto finished last season 32-36-14 with a minus-46 goal differential, the kind of number that explains exactly why the fan base is desperate for something new.

That's the organization McKenna is stepping into. A proven core, a rookie coach in Jim Hiller, and a fan base that won't wait long to start asking questions.
