Matty Beniers just gave Lane Lambert's Kraken a sharper edge with a public message aimed directly at Dallas Stars winger Jason Robertson.
Seattle reportedly tried to land Robertson with an eight-year, $120 million contract offer carrying a $15 million annual value. Robertson rejected the opportunity and stayed focused on Dallas.
That decision clearly stuck with Beniers. He defended Seattle as a destination, pushed back against the city's reputation and made it clear the Kraken aren't interested in chasing players who don't want in.
“If you don't want to be here, we don't want you, anyway,” Beniers said while discussing Robertson's rejection.
That's stronger than the standard player answer. Beniers could have brushed off the failed pursuit, praised Robertson and moved along. Instead, he turned the rejection into a statement about the Kraken's locker room.

He also emphasized that players already in Seattle enjoy the city, pointing to the nature, lifestyle and atmosphere surrounding the organization. The message was obvious: Robertson's decision doesn't define the Kraken.
Beniers turns Robertson rejection into something personal
Robertson has remained committed to the Stars, but his next contract now carries another layer of intrigue. Seattle already showed exactly how aggressively it was willing to pursue him.
And that $15 million figure now hangs over every future contract conversation involving Robertson. Dallas knows another organization was prepared to make him one of hockey's highest-paid stars.
Beniers also framed the failed pursuit as something that may ultimately benefit Seattle. Bringing in a player who didn't truly want to join the organization, in his view, wouldn't have helped the room.
That doesn't make this a full-blown rivalry yet. But Beniers just gave Seattle-Dallas meetings a personal storyline that wasn't there before, and Robertson sits directly in the middle of it.
For Lambert, there's value in one of Seattle's core players publicly defending the organization. Beniers wasn't speaking like someone embarrassed by the rejection. He sounded irritated by it.
The Stars now have a franchise winger heading toward another enormous contract conversation, while Seattle has made clear it was willing to spend heavily to pull him away.
Robertson chose Dallas. Beniers' response was just as clear: Seattle isn't interested in begging him to reconsider.
