This news comes after the 29-year-old was absent from the team's morning practice for the second day in a row. Naturally, fans and media alike became concerned with his absence and inquired about it when Montgomery held his media availability at the end of today's team practice. Notably, the team does have a pre-season game today, as well as games on Thursday and Saturday.
Based on Montgomery's comments this morning, it sounds like Lindholm will not be available to play in any of those contests. He said the center is 'day-to-day' but also added that he will not play at all this week. This would give the veteran just three opportunities to see game action before the regular season kicks off on October 8th. The Bruins have pre-season games on October 1st, the 3rd, and the 5th. Hopefully, he will be able to play in at least one of those games, but he will likely need two of them at the very lest to get back up to game speed.
Lindholm has practiced with the team earlier this month, so it is not clear if this is a new minor injury, or something that was bothering him during the offseason. It is more likely that it is the former option though, which is good news for Bruins fans and Lindholm fantasy owners alike.
That being said, the Bruins took a big risk this offseason, signing Lindholm to a seven-year deal that carries a cap hit of just under 8 million dollars per season. He already showed significant signs of age-related decline last season and was generally disappointing for Vancouver after they acquired him at the trade deadline. However, he did perform in the playoffs, putting up 10 points in 13 games. Still though, the fact that he is injured already will make some fans nervous about how this contract will look in a few years time.
Lindholm recorded 15 goals and 44 points in 75 regular-season games last year split between Calgary and Vancouver. With any luck, he should be able to outperform those numbers in his first season with Boston, but that remains to be seen.
