Kristian Antila, a goaltender who was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the late 1990s, has suddenly passed away at the young age of 44

While he never made it to the NHL, a goaltender who passed away at the young age of 44 is being remembered as a kind soul always willing to lend a hand to help anyone.

The Swedish company he was working for a salesperson has announced that former Edmonton Oilers draft pick Kristian Antila suddenly passed away earlier this month.

"Kristian was a hardworking, friendly and dedicated employee who impressed us all. In our community, he always listened, helped and supported others. He always worked with a twinkle in his eye.

We will remember Kristian as a warm and caring person who loved being outdoors in the lap of nature."

While born in Finland, Kristian Antila became best known for his work between the pipes in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). In 1998, he was drafted in the fourth round, 113th overall, by the Edmonton Oilers.

Antila never made it to the NHL. He played some games in the AHL and ECHL from 2002 to 2004 before returning to the SHL. A groin injury forced him to retire at 25.

Kristian Antila's death comes at the same time that the NHL announced that Longtime NHL Referee Mike Hasenfratz tragically passed away at the age of 58. Also, earlier this month, former hockey player and Olympian Andrzej Hachula died at the age of 64.

Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Kristian Antila. The cause of his sudden passing has not been released.
