That move lands exactly one year after Vancouver hired Foote on May 14, 2025, hoping an in-house voice could steady a team that had already taken a hard turn.
It didn't hold.
The Canucks finished 25-49-8 this season, last in the NHL, and that kind of record usually drags everyone into the fallout, starting with the coach.
Foote walked into a rough job, no question. Vancouver lost Thatcher Demko for all but 20 games, and the roster never really stopped leaking key pieces.
But a bad hand only buys so much time in this market. Once the losses pile up and the bench can't stop the slide, the coach becomes the next pressure point.
The bigger issue is what this says about the franchise. Vancouver already moved on from its general manager in April, and now the coaching chair is open again.

That's the part fans should lock in on. This isn't only about Adam Foote. It's about a team that keeps talking about a rebound while continuing to rip up its own leadership map.
The Canucks missed the playoffs for the fifth time in six seasons, and that number says more than any talking point out of a press conference ever could.
Foote's exit also closes the book on a short trial run that never gained much traction.
He was promoted for familiarity, structure, and continuity, but the season never looked settled.
-
Too often, Vancouver looked like a club chasing the game early, forcing offense late, and asking too much from a thin group that never found enough balance through the middle.
Now the next hire matters more than the last one did. This can't be another safe swing or another internal comfort pick.
The next coach has to walk in with a firm plan, a clear voice, and enough edge to reset a locker room that has been stuck in drift for too long.
Because at this point, the Canucks are no longer changing coaches to tweak the team.
They're changing coaches because the team still doesn't know what it wants to be.
