Alex Ovechkin says a decision on his hockey future will "for sure" be announced in July, dropping a hard timeline on the Washington Capitals.

That came through The Mug NHL on Wednesday afternoon. Short post. Big consequence.

Ovechkin is 40. He just finished a season with 32 goals, 32 assists, and 64 points in 82 games for Washington.

The Capitals went 43-30-9 for 95 points and finished 12th overall. They closed the year on a four-game winning streak and went 8-2-0 in their last 10.

So the question isn't whether he's still producing. The numbers say he is. The question is whether he wants another lap.

His cap hit sits at $9.5 million, tied with a handful of stars around the league. That's still real money for a player heading into his 41st year.

What a July decision means for Spencer Carbery's roster build

Spencer Carbery's locker room is built around him. Tom Wilson posted 62 points. Dylan Strome chipped in 58. Aliaksei Protas added 52. The top six is in place.

But the structure shifts if the captain walks. Ryan Leonard, 21, just put up 45 points as a rookie. The team's identity is mid-transition either way.

Ovechkin's last 10 games told the real story. He scored 6 goals and 11 points. He still bends games on the power play. He still draws coverage that frees Wilson and Strome.

His last 5 cooled to 1 goal and 3 points. A small dip. Not a collapse.

So why pick July? Free agency opens. Roster construction starts. Chris Patrick needs to know what he's building around before he hands out term to anyone else.

A July call gives Washington a runway. A later call would freeze the front office. Ovechkin clearly knows that.

And here's the part nobody wants to say out loud. A player can chase a number, win a Cup, and still not know what he wants next. The decision isn't tactical. It's personal.

The Capitals finished 4th in the Metropolitan Division. Their window is narrower than it looks on paper, especially with that -5 rating beside Ovechkin's name.

So mark the calendar. July is the month the Capitals find out what their next five years actually look like.
