Patrik Laine won't dress for Martin St-Louis and the Montreal Canadiens in Game 5 at PNC Arena.

That's now confirmed by the Canadiens and the NHL through the official rosters.

Forget the late twist. Forget the playoff surprise. Laine is still on Montreal's injured list and he is not available tonight against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Stu Cowan of The Gazette pushed the update to social media with the game-day lineup package.

"Full lineups for both teams and series statistics ahead of Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final tonight between the Canadiens and the Hurricanes in Carolina (8 p.m., CBC, SN, TVA Sports)."

Patrik Laine remains not in the official lineup.

That lines up with what DLC said earlier in the day.

"Patrik Laine? Come on..."

The door is closed on a playoff return for Patrik Laine

Some fans in Quebec still held onto the idea that Laine could show up in uniform before this run ended. That hope is done now.

The winger had been around the group for weeks. He skated with the extras, took his shots, and stayed involved in practice.

But that never meant he was close enough to play. There's a big gap between staying active at practice and being cleared for a playoff lineup.

With elimination hanging over Montreal tonight, the Canadiens were never going to force this move for one final push.

That's the hard part for Laine. A player can feel close, look close, and still be nowhere near game action when the roster gets locked in.

Montreal acquired Laine in August 2024 in the trade that sent Jordan Harris the other way, along with a 2nd-round pick.

That's where the summer story starts to come into view. Kent Hughes will have a real decision to make with Laine once this playoff run is over.

For now, none of that changes the task in front of the Canadiens. They need a win in Carolina or the season ends right there.

Puck drop is set for 8 p.m. at PNC Arena, and Laine will be watching, not playing.
