Fresh details just emerged on the Dylan Larkin trade request
Dylan Larkin's tension with the Detroit Red Wings organization did not start this offseason.
According to ESPN's Emily Kaplan, sources say the friction between Larkin and Detroit management has been building for some time, with roots going back at least to a contentious contract negotiation in 2023.
That contract ended up paying him $8.7 million per season. At the time, it looked like a franchise commitment.
What it apparently left behind was something else entirely. Testy negotiations have a way of poisoning the well, and it sounds like neither side fully moved past it.
Which raises the real question here: were the Red Wings ever truly committed to Larkin as the long-term face of this franchise, or was the deal just a way to keep the lights on?
Steve Yzerman's next move defines Detroit's rebuild direction
Larkin finished this season with 67 points in 74 games, including 14 power play goals. He carries the top line, the top power play unit, and most of the locker room identity.
Losing him would not just be a roster move. It would be a signal.
Detroit posted a 41-31-10 record this season, going just 2-6-2 over their last ten. The team allowed 258 goals, ranking them on the wrong side of league average.
That's not a team built to win now. But it's also not a team young enough to tank comfortably.
Steve Yzerman built this roster around Larkin. Walking that back in the summer of 2026 would require a full pivot, and there's no obvious replacement ready to wear that captain's C.
