Max Pacioretty, acting head coach behind his son's bench, turned a youth game into a scene nobody at the rink was going to forget.

The former Montreal Canadiens captain was coaching his son James Carter's team at the CCM Chicago Showcase when things got away from him.

The flashpoint came after a penalty was called on James Carter, born in 2017, and Pacioretty immediately went at the official from the bench.

That exchange did not last long. The referee tossed Pacioretty from the game on the spot, turning a youth tournament shift into a viral hockey moment.

What made it blow up online was the exit. Pacioretty tried to leave through the nearest door, but it would not open.

So instead of a quick walk to the room, he had to cross the full sheet in full view of both benches and the crowd. That clip gave the whole scene its legs.

The awkward exit became the whole story for Max Pacioretty

You could see the frustration in every stride as he made that long walk across the ice, with nowhere to hide and everybody watching. Then the video started moving everywhere online.

That part matters because Pacioretty is not some random parent losing it in the stands. He is a former NHL captain, and that changes how people read the moment.

It also lands differently because he has leaned hard into post-playing life around hockey, working in the NCAA scene in Michigan and coaching his kids.

The strange twist is that the day still ended on a high note for the team. Stars International went on to win the tournament with an 8-7 overtime victory.

And the winner came off the stick of James Carter himself, wearing number 67, the same number tied to his father's playing days.

That does not erase the bench blowup. For a former NHL name, getting ejected from a youth game is one thing. Having to march across the rink after the door would not open is what turned it into a story people will remember.
