The hire is official now. Edmonton moved from an open bench to one of the biggest coaching swings in hockey, and there is nothing quiet about the name they chose.
NHL.com lists Babcock as the 19th head coach in franchise history. The Oilers site also says the 63-year-old brings a 700-418-183 record and a Stanley Cup from 2008 in Detroit.
That alone would make this a major story. But this hire was always about more than résumé, because the league had to clear Babcock's return before Edmonton could move forward.
So the first real takeaway is simple: Stan Bowman did not go for a soft landing. He went for the loudest possible bench move, and now every part of this team will be judged through that choice.
That starts with the stars. McDavid and Leon Draisaitl were already carrying the biggest expectations in the league, and a coach like Babcock only raises the temperature around every lineup call, every ice-time split, and every playoff result.
It also puts Bowman right in the middle of the pressure. The Oilers relieved Kris Knoblauch and assistant coach Paul Stuart on May 14, so this was never going to be framed as a minor adjustment.

Now the bench matches that approach. Jeff Jackson and Bowman are telling the roster, the fan base, and the rest of the league that this is not a reset built around comfort. It is a push built around demand.
There is obvious risk in that. Babcock's return was never going to be treated like a normal coaching change, and the scrutiny around his methods will follow him from Day 1.
But Edmonton did not make this move to win the news cycle. The Oilers made it because they believe Mike Babcock gives them a better shot at turning a contender into a champion, and that makes this the biggest decision of their offseason.
