Matthew Knies has become a real test for Jim Hiller, with Toronto stuck between keeping a core winger and using him to chase a much bigger move.
Now we have major confirmation from a trusted source that a trade is still in the works.
The Leafs are right back in trade noise around the 23-year-old, and this time it feels heavier than random summer chatter. There's consequence attached to every call.
According to Darren Dreger, a strong share of league executives believe Knies could still be moved. That matters because Toronto has spent weeks sending mixed signals on where this is headed.
One side of the story says the Leafs value Knies as part of the group they're building. The other says rival clubs still see him as the piece most likely to unlock a blockbuster.
That tension didn't come out of nowhere. Toronto and Montreal were reportedly close to a deadline deal before the paperwork missed the 3 p.m. ET cutoff by less than a minute.
Kent Hughes later said his club had come “very close” to landing a major trade. That quote still hangs over this story because it suggests Knies was never just a rumor chip.
The Leafs still control the biggest decision
The front office has changed since then, and John Chayka is now the one driving the board. That shifts the tone, even if the pressure around Knies hasn't eased.
Dreger's reporting points to frustration around the league. Teams want a straight answer, and if Toronto is only pushing the price higher without real intent to move him, that patience won't last.
Knies gives the Leafs a reason to dig in. He posted 66 points in 79 games last season, and that kind of top-six production at his age is not easy to replace.
He also brings the style contenders chase. He can play through traffic, get to the crease, work off the wall, and give a top line some bite without dragging down the pace.
That's why this file cuts both ways for Hiller. A coach wants to hold onto a winger like this, especially one who still fits the age range of the roster.
But if Toronto is serious about chasing a franchise-level upgrade, Knies remains the name other teams will ask for first. And until that changes, this story stays hot.
Should the Maple Leafs keep Matthew Knies out of any blockbuster trade?
