Matthew Knies has become a real test for Jim Hiller, with Toronto stuck between keeping a core winger and using him to chase a much bigger move.

The Leafs are right back in trade noise around the 23-year-old, and this time it feels heavier than random summer chatter. There's consequence attached to every call.
According to Darren Dreger, a strong share of league executives believe Knies could still be moved. That matters because Toronto has spent weeks sending mixed signals on where this is headed.
One side of the story says the Leafs value Knies as part of the group they're building. The other says rival clubs still see him as the piece most likely to unlock a blockbuster.
That tension didn't come out of nowhere. Toronto and Montreal were reportedly close to a deadline deal before the paperwork missed the 3 p.m. ET cutoff by less than a minute.

That's why this file cuts both ways for Hiller. A coach wants to hold onto a winger like this, especially one who still fits the age range of the roster.
