Emil Andrae gives Jim Hiller a new blue-line option as Toronto locks in the 24-year-old defenseman on a 2-year contract.

It is a roster move with real meaning for a team still trying to reshape its defense after a messy 2025-26 season and a full summer reset under John Chayka.
Andrae comes in with more NHL proof than people may think. He played 61 games for Philadelphia in 2025-26 and put up 2 goals, 11 assists, and a plus-15 rating.
For Toronto, that matters. He is not arriving as a pure project or a camp flyer. He already handled regular NHL minutes, averaging 15:20 a night last season.
The player profile is easy to spot. Andrae is 5-foot-9, shoots left, and moves the puck better than his size will make some people expect at first glance.
He also is still young enough that Toronto can treat this as more than depth insurance. At 24, there is still room for another jump if the fit is right.

That is the strongest angle on this deal. The Leafs are not bringing in Andrae to play a bruising shutdown role. They are bringing in a defender who can help the puck get out cleanly and keep plays moving.
That fits the bigger picture around Hiller. Toronto hired him as its 41st head coach after a summer that already brought major front-office and roster changes.
It also fits what the Leafs need behind the NHL names. A team cannot live only on expensive defensemen. It needs cheap bets who can force decisions and survive NHL games when injuries hit. That is where Andrae gets interesting.
There is some risk, of course. A 5-foot-9 defenseman always gets tested harder in his own zone, and Toronto is not exactly a market that gives young defenders a quiet runway.
Still, the numbers from last season give this move real bite. A plus-15 defender in 61 NHL games is not something you ignore, even if the point totals stay modest.
That is why this signing works. Emil Andrae gives the Maple Leafs another smart blue-line bet, another player with real NHL reps, and another chance for Jim Hiller to find value in a defense group that still needs sorting.
