Colton Dach gives Mike Babcock another option after Stan Bowman locked the Edmonton Oilers forward into a team-friendly contract.

Dach signed a two-year deal carrying a $1,200,000 annual cap hit, giving Edmonton cost certainty on a player with size, skill and room to climb the lineup.

The agreement also completes Bowman's work following a pair of connected deadline trades with Chicago. Edmonton acquired Dach, Jason Dickinson and Connor Murphy in the sequence.

The Oilers sent Andrew Mangiapane, a 2028 second-round pick and a top-12 protected 2027 first-round pick to the Blackhawks.

All three additions made an immediate impression. Murphy strengthened the blue line, Dickinson gave Edmonton a dependable two-way centre, and Dach brought a physical element to the bottom six.

Dach played 8 regular-season games after arriving. His 6-foot-4, 220-pound frame gives Babcock a forward who can pressure defenders and create space around the crease.

“Stan Bowman turned two connected trades with Chicago into what is increasingly looking like his best move of the year. Edmonton acquired Jason Dickinson, Connor Murphy, and Colton Dach, and all three immediately showed they could contribute. With each player now signed to team-friendly contracts, the value of the deal continues to grow.”

The Oilers may have just pulled off one of the biggest steals of recent years Colton Dach

The contract makes the move more attractive because Edmonton didn't surrender major draft capital for short-term rentals. Bowman retained every acquired player beyond the deadline run.

Murphy signed for 5 years at $4,100,000 per season. Dickinson agreed to a 5-year contract carrying a $4,000,000 annual cap hit.

Dach now becomes the upside piece. If he earns a larger role during the first season of the deal, Edmonton will still control him at the same low number the following year.

That gives Babcock flexibility across the bottom six. Dach can begin in a checking role, bring energy along the boards and push for minutes beside more skilled forwards.

Consistency will decide his ceiling. Dach must improve his reads and prove he can make quick decisions against NHL pressure rather than relying only on his size.

“Connor Murphy and Jason Dickinson were viewed as the centerpiece acquisitions, while Colton Dach was initially seen as more of a secondary piece. However, Dach quickly showcased his combination of size, physicality, and offensive upside. His new two-year contract gives the Oilers a chance to benefit significantly if he takes another step forward.”

The Oilers can afford to be patient because his contract creates little financial strain. A breakthrough would give Bowman surplus value at a time when Edmonton needs affordable contributors around its stars.

Murphy and Dickinson were the established targets, but Dach could become the part of the transaction that changes how the entire deal is judged.

Bowman paid a substantial price to reshape the roster. Getting 3 useful players signed at manageable numbers turns that deadline swing into one of his strongest pieces of work in Edmonton.
