Derek Lalonde is joining Martin St-Louis in Montreal, and the Canadiens just gave their bench a coach with real NHL mileage.
This wasn't a minor tweak to the staff. Montreal named Lalonde its associate coach Monday, a move that adds a veteran voice beside St-Louis as the club keeps pushing its next step.

The Canadiens didn't go looking for a development-only teacher here. They brought in someone who has worked deep in the Stanley Cup chase and handled the heat behind an NHL bench.
Lalonde spent 4 seasons as an assistant with the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2018 to 2022.

During that run, Tampa Bay won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021, and that kind of room matters when a young team is trying to grow up fast.
He also knows what comes with the head job.
Lalonde ran the Detroit Red Wings from 2022 to 2024, so this is not a coach arriving in Montreal to learn the league on the fly.
That experience should show up fast in pre-scout work, bench management, and the little in-game adjustments that can swing a second period or settle a rough back-to-back. Montreal already had energy behind the bench.
Now it adds more structure.
A staff move with bigger meaning for the Canadiens
Lalonde's most recent stop also stands out.
He worked as an assistant with the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 2025-26 season, which means he arrives in Montreal with a fresh read on today's NHL habits, pressure points, and special teams detail.
Over more than 20 years in pro hockey, he built a track record well before his NHL jump. That path matters because Montreal's staff now includes a coach who has seen prospects, veterans, playoff pushes, and lineup corrections from every angle.
Before the NHL, Lalonde won the Clark Cup with the Green Bay Gamblers in 2011-12.
He was also named USHL Coach of the Year that same season, another sign this hire is tied to teaching as much as tactics.
He later earned ECHL Coach of the Year honors in 2014-15, which rounds out the profile. Montreal didn't just add a resume line. It added a coach who has been trusted to organize teams, set standards, and keep players accountable.
That matters for a Canadiens group still trying to lock in habits over 82 games. When a team wants cleaner details on the blue line, sharper puck support, and more reliable special teams, staff hires like this can shape the season before puck drop.
For St-Louis, this looks like support, not replacement. For the Canadiens, it looks like a move made with the standings in mind, because Lalonde gives the room another proven voice with real NHL weight behind it.
