Chris Johnston says he continues to hear that Rielly will be traded before the next season begins.

Rielly has spent his entire NHL career with the Maple Leafs, making any move far more significant than a routine blue-line adjustment.
Toronto would also need his cooperation because his contract includes trade protection. Finding a willing destination is only one part of the process.
The Maple Leafs must then secure a return that helps Hiller's roster rather than creating another major weakness before camp.

Moving Rielly would open a clear hole in puck movement from the blue line. Toronto would need another defender capable of supporting controlled exits and offensive-zone possession.
His departure could also free financial room for a different roster priority. The Maple Leafs have been connected to forward help while continuing to reshape their lineup.
But a trade made only for cap relief would carry risk. Toronto still needs experienced defenders who can handle difficult minutes and contribute on special teams.
The timing matters as well. Waiting too long could leave fewer replacement options available and force the organization into a rushed decision near training camp.
Johnston's update suggests the expectation around the league hasn't changed, even with Rielly still on the roster deep into the offseason.
That gives interested clubs leverage, but Toronto doesn't have to accept a weak package simply because a move is widely anticipated.
Hiller also needs clarity. A major blue-line departure would affect pairings, power-play deployment and the overall identity of the defence.
Rielly may still report to camp if the right trade never develops. But the current message is that Toronto continues working toward a separation before puck drop.
