Elias Pettersson faces a punishing travel year after former Canucks coach Adam Foote repeatedly warned about a compressed schedule.

Sports sleep specialist Dr. Pat Byrne called Vancouver's 2026-27 schedule one of the biggest messes he has seen during nearly 20 years in professional sports.

His concern goes beyond normal road mileage. Byrne pointed to late starts, repeated time-zone changes and several condensed trips that could disrupt recovery.

Vancouver has 9 home games scheduled for 8 p.m. starts. Those nights push post-game routines deeper into the evening and make consistent sleep harder.

The first major test arrives in October with 6 games in 10 nights across the East Coast.

That trip begins in Carolina, moves north to New York and finishes in Florida, forcing the Canucks through another demanding travel loop.

Sleep doctor says the NHL went too far with Vancouver

The largest warning surrounds a January road trip featuring 7 games in 12 nights and 4 time-zone changes.

Vancouver will travel through Colorado, Nashville, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Dallas and St. Louis during that stretch.

The schedule also includes a back-to-back between Chicago and Pittsburgh. Byrne described the full trip as the Canucks' toughest challenge of the season.

Two more compressed eastern swings add to the workload. Vancouver plays 4 games in 7 nights during one trip, then faces another run of 5 games in 9 nights.

Byrne said the combination can affect players' circadian rhythms, especially when late starts and frequent travel interfere with normal recovery windows.

The Canucks once worked closely with Byrne under Mike Gillis. Byrne said the organization later moved away from its sleep and travel program after Trevor Linden and Jim Benning arrived.

This season places that old debate back in focus. Vancouver can't change the schedule, but it can control travel routines, rest planning and how carefully minutes are managed.

For Pettersson and the rest of the locker room, the challenge begins long before puck drop. The Canucks will need discipline away from the rink just to stay fresh through the heaviest stretches.
